Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill 'stands by' conviction of Abdelbaset Al Megrahi over Lockerbie bombing despite mounting calls for inquiry

Scotland’s Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill was interviewed by BBC Scotland on his decision to release Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi from Greenock Prison, returning home to Libya late yesterday.

Mr MacAskill. much to the amazement of many, states he stands by the conviction of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, despite the numerous inconsistencies in the evidence presented at the Lockerbie Trial at Camp Zeist in the Netherlands under Scottish Law in 2001.

Noteworthy again is the lack of will on the part of the Justice Secretary to institute an inquiry into the Lockerbie case from the Scottish end .. seemingly putting the onus on Westminster to start the ball rolling. However, since the case was heard under Scots Law, and given law is a devolved issue .. why is there no apparent will on Mr MacAskill’s part to start an inquiry in Scotland ?

We at Scottish Law Reporter support the call for a fully independent inquiry into the Lockerbie case. Sucn an inquiry should of course originate in Scotland, and have international monitoring to ensure full impartiality & accountability to the facts.

Theatrics from this guy macaskill.
Anyone who thinks they will get an inquiry out of this is living in cuckoo land.

Think about it.The CIA probably knew the plane had a bomb on it just like they knew 2 planes were going to take out the WTCs in NY and your own intel knew the London bombers were on their way to do what they did on your underground trains but no one stopped them or in what happened over here so if anyone really thinks there will be an inquiry into the Lockerbie bombing that will reveal everyone knew the bomb was on the plane and who planted it before it went off and this guy might only be a stooge to cover it all up then tough!

Just look how many of our companies and yours are back in Libya doing business anyway oh and of course theres all that OIL that Libya has that WE NEED so who really gives a shit about the poor devils who were on that 747 over Lockerbie because too much $$$$ is at stake and we ARE in a recession!

Kenny MacAskill should have mustered the basic "compassion" to at the very least meet with the 270 victims' relatives, husbands, parents, children, wives, and loved ones to satisfactorily elaborate and explain to them the reason and need for compassion in this case for a man convicted of a knowing and active role in a murderous bombing that had only political motivations. He met with the convicted man. Is it too much to ask that he might have the "compassion" to offer to meet with let us say, just the parents of the children who died in the incident before he made his pronouncement and extolled the virtious motivations behind his thoughtful and compassionate decision? Alas it was not to be. The good Justice Secretary's sense of right, wrong, the Rule of Law, and "compassion" is at best, stunted, and at worst, perverted. For those like him it's always the State's justice, law and "compassion" by and for itself and those who sit with authority to mete it out. The victims be damned as they obviously don't really fit into the "Justice" Secretary's calculus it would seem. Say what you want and he made a point of paying lip service to the contrary but the way he went about it makes that fact painfully clear. Perhaps he would have reached the same decision even if he had spoken to the victims' survivors. We won't know the answer to that one. At the very least, wouldn't it be nice if the system made it appear as if the interests of the victims were at least being solicited and considered by the "Justice" Secretary with as much thoughfulness and compassion as is afforded the convict? Novel thought that? Imagine a system of "justice" in which, if nothing else, it at least appears to those with a keen interest in the decisions that the system listens and cares about their concerns. I'd say the "Justice" Secretary would do well to think about how his "compassion" might feel. Perhaps he'd have pause to reconsider how he's gone about the matter if he had the burden of walking in the shoes of the victims' families. That would be a good place to start in considering a request for "compassion" toward a convict would it not? Why not try to make the victims' families feel like they are not being victimized anew? Why not try to make them feel that the Scottish government and the "Justice" Secretary give equal consideration to concerns for "compassion" toward the victims and their survivors?

I hope the world never forgets the Scottish National Party set free a convicted terrorist.
Reason enough to vote for someone else ?

The Secretary is utterly contemptible. Where is his compassion for the civilized people this Pig murdered? If Scotland keeps him in his position, it shows how little Scotsmen care about any friendship with America. Frankly, I would like the concession to sell tickets to Al Megrahi's death watch. As someone who traces his ancestry to Clan Gunn, I would think all Scotsmen should be ashamed of MacAskill.

Even though he is dying,he should not be trusted and he should still be monitored.

The world is never going to forget the Scottish National Party set free a convicted terrorist who killed hundreds of people aboard that flight.
You should all be ashamed of them in Scotland for this.

I am glad to see someone is willing to stand up for his convictions, regardless the outcry. However, what I can't understand, the same people who complain about Mr. MacAskill's decision have lost sight of the invasion of Iraq, which was done based on hatred of a government and people who had nothing to do with 9/11. Nor did they have WMD. However, because no military on the planet could stop the US invasion, thousands of innocent men, women and children were killed. Where is the justice for them against the US terrorist who invaded there country on a lie? There justice will only come from God, as will the justice for the 270 killed in PanAm flight 103.

Brave decision I suppose but the fear is the SNP will be cuddling up to the middle east for money now and with that will follow lots of bribes and corruption.
Remember the SNP took a jaunt to the middle east because Mike Russell wanted to sell all our forests and that had to be cancelled so probably Salmond and his chums will be sniffing around for directorships of oil companies in the desert as payback for letting their man out

This action only goes to prove that Scotland supports terrorism. Shame on you Mr. Justice Secretary, you have now given the terrorists and all evil a win over all that is good. The saving grace is that God will punish you, if not in this life, then in the next.
