Turcan Connell open offices in London as OFT reforms on legal services beckon

Amid the thoughts of some that a few legal firms may leavel Scotland and head south, Messrs Turcan Connell have opened offices in London, announcing no plans to move their Scottish operation south at this time ...

Douglas Connell, joint senior partner of Turcan Connell & an alleged supporter of freeing up access to legal services in Scotland tells the Herald "Scotland has traditionally had a separate legal system from the rest of the UK, and since devolution the volume of new legislation north of the border has increased dramatically. Turcan Connell's London presence is designed to bring the firm closer to clients who own property or have interests in Scotland but do not live there. Almost 10% of our clients live in London and the Home Counties, and a further 5% live overseas."

Let's hope clients south of the Border keep themselves aware of Messrs Turcan Connell's regulatory history in Scotland ...

Solicitors and asset manager Turcan Connell has opened an office in London. The Edinburgh-based firm, which acts for a number of landowners, entrepreneurs and other high-profile figures in Scotland, took the decision in order to develop closer contact with clients outside Scotland.

Since completing a contract to lease the new office in Mayfair on June 5, Turcan Connell has refurbished the premises and installed a communications infrastructure. The opening last Wednesday was planned to coincide with the firm's 10th anniversary.

Turcan Connell already has an office in Guernsey, but decided to open in London to serve an increasingly international client base.

Douglas Connell, joint senior partner, said: "Scotland has traditionally had a separate legal system from the rest of the UK, and since devolution the volume of new legislation north of the border has increased dramatically. Turcan Connell's London presence is designed to bring the firm closer to clients who own property or have interests in Scotland but do not live there. Almost 10% of our clients live in London and the Home Counties, and a further 5% live overseas.

"Having an office in London and close to international transport hubs will provide a better way of serving clients not resident in Scotland.

Turcan Connell also has an investment and financial planning arm that manages over £500m for clients on a discretionary basis. The London presence will give the firm's investment managers closer contact with City fund managers.

Douglas Connell said: "The firm already works closely with many City firms to advise on Scots law matters and the move is intended to strengthen those relationships.

"The firm originally set out to be the leading private client firm in Scotland. It now intends to be the leading private client business based in Scotland."

The firm has no current plans to relocate staff to London.
